Franklin Association records, 1810-1813.

This collection consists of a bound volume, containing the constitution, rules, bylaws, officer and membership criteria for the Franklin Association from 1810-1813. It also contains membership listings and dues payment summary sheets for those years. Within the minutes and notes sections are summaries of the association's meetings, which consisted of reading and writing nights, quarterly meetings and special meetings. These notes were mainly written by John Thomson, Thomas Christie, and Benjamin Bloomfield, who each served as secretaries of the association.

The Franklin Association was among a number of social, intellectual and fraternal literary organizations in Newark in the early 18th century, and was founded to be a literary society for the purposes of discussion, reading, criticism, and composition. The group met on a weekly basis, and through discussion and reading evaluated various political, social, ethical, and legal questions of the day. The membership was all male.
